![]() Grades UpdateDear Parents and Students,
We are currently updating our online gradebook, and hope to have everything done by Monday, Feb. 22. I appreciate your patience while the grades are being updated on IGPro. Miss E:) January 13, 2010Today we continued to talk about the court system in place in the United States, but at the national level. We have already discussed the Virginia Court System and how it was developed. The students continued to work on the Judicial System flip books that are due for homework on Friday. The students were given a rubric on the back of their flip book to follow.
The students also received an updated grade report. Since the end of the semester is rapidly approaching, it is important for the students to see were they currently stand. Parents: Please sign and return the form. December 14, 2009Today we review again for our Public Policy CFA test. The students will be re-tested on Dec. 16.
December 2, 2009Today we continued reviewing for our test on Friday. There is a study guide attached under the class files tab, along with the Jeopardy PowerPoint that we used to review in class. Please make sure you follow the rubric when you complete your TITLE PAGE for tomorrow!!!
November 30, 2009In preparation for our CFA Test on Friday, we reviewed our vocabulary from this past unit today and discussed the various definitions of each. We continued to work on our Centers that will be due Dec. 10. The students received a Study Guide today, and can be located in the class files section under the Public Policy folder. Under the "Helpful Hints" tab, students can find the various ways that they can study for the test.
November 24, 2009Today we continued talking about how public policy is influenced. We went back and reviewed how the president influences public policy in four ways:
1. Appealing directly to the people 2. In an annual speech to Congress (State of the Union) 3. Approving or Vetoing a bill 4. Appointing cabinet officials We finished out the class working on our CENTERS that have been thus far an IN CLASS continuing assignment. A final due date for the CENTERS has been set for DEC. 10. We will be in the computer lab for the entire class period on Dec. 8 so that all students have access to a computer, internet, and printing before the assignment is due. Schedule for next week: We will be reviewing for our Public Policy CFA test on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 before our CFA Test on Dec. 4. If you would like to begin review for the test, the study guide is located under the Policy Making folder at the bottom of the page. You may also go on SOLpass.org to play games with the information. It is objective CE. 7 November 12, 2009Today we began discussing how the media influences people and thier decision making. We compared actual photographs from the debate for the 1960 Election of Kennedy/Nixon. Many of the students thought that Kennedy looked more confident, younger, and relaxed. I told them when people were polled who WATCHED the debate they believed that Kennedy won. On the otherhand, when people who LISTENED to the debate were polled, majority believed that Nixon won. The students completed an assignment in the class that asked them to think of examples of the 3 ways the media influences decision making and to think of the positives and negatives for each.
Do YOU think you are influenced by the media? November 9, 2009The 8th grade students took part in the first nomination for Patriot of the Month in Civics class. The students were asked to nominate a student that exemplifies Porter's Star Qualities along with qualities of good citizenship. The goal is for the students to be able to recognize good behavior when it is done by another in order to increase better decision-making by all students. Congrats to Victoria Weaver and Brian Lafranchise who was chosen by their peers as the Patriots of the Month!
